Baffin Fisheries Acknowledges the Passing of Former Board Member Leo Maktar

IQALUIT, Friday February 03, 2023 – It is with great sadness that Baffin Fisheries acknowledges the passing of former Board Member and Vice-President Leo Maktar of Pond Inlet, in the early hours of Friday, February 3. Leo was a key member of the executive team when Baffin Fisheries made the transition from a royalty company to an integrated seafood harvesting company, owning, and operating a fleet of three large vessels. Leo was a true hero in turning the Company around during a difficult time in 2017. He stood up for what was right and made sure the Company prospered for the benefit of Hunters and Trappers.

Leo was also a great hunter and fisherman, and community leader in Pond Inlet. He served on the Mittimatalik HTA Board for many years and was instrumental in bringing a new office building and community freezer to Pond Inlet. Whenever there was a need for search and rescue, Leo was there to help. It was not unusual for Leo to jump on his snowmobile and travel nine or ten hours in minus 40-degree weather, in complete darkness, to help a hunter in need of assistance.

Leo will be greatly missed by the entire community of Pond Inlet, by all of us at Baffin Fisheries, and especially by his loving wife Myna, and children Donna, Rhoda, Ezekial, Komangapik, Enook, and Joanasie.
